Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific solutions presented reading passage. why prevent declining trees?
The reading and lecture are both about Torreya tree, which started to die out. The author of reading believes that can prevent diminishing Torreya in some ways. The lecture challenges the methods made by the author. The Professor is of the opinion that the ways are not useful.
First of all, the author suggests that can restore Torreya in the same location that it grew many years ago because that area has a specific microclimate, so, provides favorable conditions for Torreya's growth. This idea is challenged by the lecture. She says that these areas changed by climate changes. Furthermore, she mentions that global warming caused the temperature to increase in these zones, therefore, the area dried and it is unlikely Torreya to survive in these conditions.
Secondly, the writer contends that it can transfer Torreya to a different place. The article notes Torreya seeds have thrived in forests further north; consequently, seeds are able to grow in other places, and also the relocation process known as assisted migration that does by a human. The lecture, however, rebuts this by asserting that the assisted migration can create unpredicted results. She elaborates on this by mentioning one example; before, people tried to move the black locus tree to the new environment, so it grew quickly, but this tree killed other plants that were in that environment, and it caused some trees to become to extinct.
Finally, it is stated that in the article one way to save Torreya is keeping them in research centers, because scientists can monitor their environment, and researchers do easier their researches on Torreya. The lecture, on the other hand, posits that if Torreya keeps in research centers, it will get diseases because Torreya to survive needs to large space and genetically diverse, while these centers have not enough space, also they have not various population.
