Suppression of forest fires
The reading and the lecture discuss the effects of forest fires. While the former states that the occurrence of these events has more drawbacks, the latter asserts that these fires have more benefits than disadvantages, casting doubts on the claims of the passage.
First and foremost, the article indicates that avoiding forest fires implies an improvement in oaks' health. The lecturer, however, states that the suppression of forest fires may produce bad long term effects on forest life. To be specific, she mentions that oaks need light to grow and mature, and that the wilderness management may interfere negatively on this process.
In addition, it is mentioned in the passage that fire suppression that vines and low bushes may flourish better when fires are suppressed. In the class, the professor calls into question this assumption. She posits out that it would be difficult for oaks to grow due to the fact that this smaller vegetation would run over the forest, and as a result, there will be more competition for resources.
Finally, the author also affirms that wild animals will be benefited, increasing the number of their population. On the other hand, the academic says that the oaks' leaves would die, so there would not be enough food for deers. She elaborates on this pointing out that forest fires release nutrients which can afterward help the development of life in the forest.
