In the passage, the author poses three evidence to explain why humpback whales can use stars to navigate. However, the professor challenges the article because these three reasons are not reliable.
First, according to the reading passage, humpback whale are smart enough to be navigated by stars. Whereas, the professor points out there is no real connection between intelligence and the use of star to find direction. Hence other average animals are able to use stars for orientation, such as ducks. The fact that the development of understanding stars' position does not seem to be related with intelligence and ducks are bored with this ability. So the reason that whales find their ways by observing stars is nonsense.
Second, the writer claims that the route of humpback whales' migration is straight line, which shows they use stars as signals to orientation. Contrary, the lecture indicates that there are other external forces that make their migration lines be straight, like the earth's magnetic field. In humpback whales' brains, there is a mechanism to allow them to sense magnetic force and then they are equipped with a ability to orientated themselves straightly toward their direction.
Last, the reading proposes that humpback whales float above water in order to look at the stars to decide which way to go. Nevertheless, the professor announces that it is nothing to do with the observance of the stars. Other animals like shark also make their head above the water just for hunting instead of navigation. In addition, the professor points out that even in daytime when stars can not be seen, the humpback whales' heads will be above the ocean.
