TPO-11 - Integrated Writing Task A recent study reveals that people especially young people are reading far less literature, novels, plays, and poems, than they used to. This is troubling because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for

Both the reading and listening discuss the less reading literature of young people. The passages provides three adverse results of it. The speaker casts doubts on the claims made in the article. He argues that it is not entirely accurate in each of the author's point.
The first issue the passage points out is that people would miss vital information for not spending time on novels because novels enhance imagination, empathy and language understanding of others. However, the speaker argues that there are books such as science, history, political ones which include equivalent qualities as novels. Therefore, people do not miss any core knowledge by reading other books to fulfill their brain. In other words, other kinds of books do give readers sufficient principle information.
The second concern that the article mentions is the loss of culture for not reading literature. Young people are likely to watch television, music video, website, poorly-written books of best sellers instead. This is challenged by the lecturer. He rebuts that the culture is changing so there are new form of it are creating such as movies, music videos which directly speak out clear messages to audience. As a result, people are using their time wisely on other forms of culture.
Last but not least, the article asserts that the lack of readers lead to less interest in reading novels. Thus publishers won't invest their money on developing good novels. The speaker, on the other hand, contends that current novels are very difficult to understand. They do not interpret in the way everyone can get it so the blame should not be on readers. Consequently, audiences are not the main reason which make to decrease in studying novels.
