The professor explains three clear arguments opposing the points stated in the reading passage about the impossibility of controlling Zebra Mussels' population in their new habitats.
First, the reading passage claims that historically, Zebra Mussells used to transport from Europe to North America by human transportation vehicles like ships which made their population invaded in Northern America's area. Conversely, the professor brings up the idea that people used to think about control-ability of Zebra Mussels due to lack of knowledge. For instance, nowadays, we can solve the ships' problem by using salt water which kills Zebra Mussels. When ships are in the ocean, they empty the ballast water and fill it with ocean's salt water. Therefore, there will not be any zebra mussel that transport to North America.
Second, the professor opposes the idea presented in the reading passage about zebra mussels' dominance in new habitat when they arrive to. He believes that zebra mussels' dominance will not sustainable for long time due to the fact that they might be prey of other predators. To illustrate, some bird in Europe found that zebra mussels are rich source of food and haunted many of them everyday. So, this reason has been repudiates by professor.
Third and last, the reading passage asserts that zebra mussels may have negative impact on fish population because they eat plankton that are food source of other fish. However, professor disproves the idea due to the fact that zebra mussels can provide nutrients which are very useful for bottom-feeding fish. As he states, although zebra mussels may cause declination in plankton eaters fish, they may cause enhancement in bottom-feeding fish population. Hence, zebra mussels can help other types of fresh water fish to survive. Thus, professor rejected this idea based on aforementioned explanations
