The reading discusses that zebra mussel is a serious threat that their invasions can not be stopped. The author listed three factors to support this idea. However, the speaker finds all the reasons dubious and presents some evidence to refute all three ideas strongly.
First, the author argues that history showed that they are unstoppable. To clarify this point, the author mentioned they stuck to the ships which were carrying cargo in the ocean and in this way spread to all world. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this idea and states they were manageable but in the past, people did not have enough knowledge of how to control them. Besides, explained, if they emptied the freshwater and used ocean water, this salty water would kill them.
Second, the author proposes that as they did not have any predators in the new habitat they reproduced fast and became dominant. On the other hand, the speaker casts doubt on this issue by standing that in the beginning, there were not any predators while, after a period of the time, birds found a new food resource so start to feed on them.
Last but not least, the author mentioned that as they became dominant they decrease the population of the fish. Those fish fed on planktons, though they were the predator of plankton and this competition was responsible for this event. In contrast, the speaker states that although the population of fish that depend on the planktons diminished, the population of independent fish increased because zebra mussel generated nutrient materials for them.
