TPO-28 - Integrated Writing Task
In the reading passage, the author holds the opinion that the famous adventure, Robert E. Peary’s travel to the north arctic is true and list out three reasons for supporting this claims. However, in the lecture, the professor takes a totally different point of view with the author and stated that the mentioned reasons are unconvincing and refuted them one by one.
First of all, in the reading passage, the author points out that the Peary expedition to the North Pole was approved by the National Geographic Society in that time. In the lecture, the professor acknowledges this, but she states that the members of the aforementioned committee were not completely objective. She stated that the committee was composed of the Peary's friends and they did not examine his evidence carefully.
Secondly, the author stated that a recent expedition provided more support for Peary's claim where the other adventure, Avery, by using the same kind of dogsled in the same number reached to the pole in the time same as the time in it the Peary reached to the pole previously. On the contrary, the professor put forward that in Avery's travel the food was provided by the airplane, while this condition did not exist for the Peary and pulling the food made their trip more difficult. Besides, it is stated that the weather condition in the time of Peary’s travel was more severe than the condition that exists in Avery's expedition.
Finally, according to the writer, the images that provided by Peary can be used for approving his claims and it can be substantiated by measuring the shadows in Peary's photographs. The lecturer, on the other hand, put forth the claim that the mentioned pictures cannot prove anything. She states that the camera which was used at that time did not has sufficient quality. What is more, the quality of Surf shadow changed by passing the time. So, it is declared that they are not so accurate for reaching exact result about Peary's travel to the North Pole.
