The reading and passage both talk about Steller's sea cow, huge marine mammals which are lived in the waters around Bering Island of the coast of Siberia and extinct in about 1769. In the reading passage, the author mentioned that the cause of this extinction is not clear and list out three possible theory to explain this extinction. However, the lecturer holds a different point of view and retorted the stated theories one by one.
First of all, the author points out that the sea cow overhunting by the native Siberian people who used these animals as a food source was the main cause of their extinction. However, the professor challenged this theory. The lecturer stated that the sea cows were massive creatures- each of them was about ten ton. So, it is concluded that one sea cows could use as food for several months and they did not in need to hunt these animals in a large number.
Secondly, the passage claims that the ecosystems disturbance that caused a decline in the main source of sea cows' food, klep, brought about their extinction. On the contrary, the author stated that there are some reports that klep growth was sufficient during that time. The professor holds the opinion that if the klep had been reduced in that period of time, the number of other animals would have reduced while there is not any report of other animal extinction.
Finally, the author states that the European fur traders who hunt the sea cow for using their fur were the other potential agents in sea cow extinction. The professor, on the other hand, refuted this theory. According to the professor, by the time that these people arrived at the sea cow area the population of these animals was low. It is concluded that this reduction takes place long before the fur traders arrival. So, the last theory of the author detected unconvincing.
