Both the author and the lecturer discuss whether the Greeks built a device called a burning mirror to defend themselves against the Roman attack or not. The author states that the burning mirror is just a myth. In contrast, the lecturer disagrees with this claim, casting doubt on every single point made by the author.
First, the author states that the Greeks never built such a device because they were not technologically advanced enough to build a several meters wide mirror. However, the lecturer disagrees with this idea, arguing that the mirror must not be made up of a single sheep copper and the Greeks actually made it from dozens of small flat pieces of copper shaped parabolic. Therefore, it seems that the Greeks built such a device.
Second, the author believes that the burning mirror took them a long time about 10 minutes to set the ships on fire and during that time the object had to be unmoving. On the contrary, the lecturer possesses the view that the fire reached the wood about 10 minutes but the boats did not consist of wood alone and other materials like sticky substance named pitch used to seal the space between wooden boards which caught the fire very quickly, causing the whole ship to get fired in seconds even if they were moving.
Third, the author argues that the burning mirror did not consider an improvement in setting the ships on fire as the Greeks had flaming arrows acting like the burning mirrors. So, it was not necessary to build such a device. In opposition to this, the lecturer suggests that the Romans were familiar with flaming arrows, watching them from a distance and as a result, they were always ready to put out the fire but they can just saw the mirror of the burning mirror from afar and they could not guess where the fire would set. Thus, such devices were much more surprising and effective for attacks.
