The reading passage describes an innovative weapon that was used by the Greeks called a "burning mirror" and provided three reasons about why it is not practical and the Greeks never had such a device. However, the professor in the listening part cast doubt on these reasons.
According to the reading, firstly, the Greeks didn't have the essential technology to build a device like that, but the lecturer argued this since it is feasible if they created a large parabolic sheet using many small pieces.
Secondly, Romans had other materials on their ships besides wood such as a sticky substance called pitch that would take only some seconds to set on fire/ to ignite.
Lastly, the Roman soldiers were watching for the Greeks' flaming arrows but a light ray can't be seen and was much more surprising. So, using those mirrors was more effective than shooting flaming arrows to set fire to the ships.
