The passage and the lecture discuss a European silver coin dating to 1000 years ago which is founded in Maine in the United States. The passage presents three reasons why the coin could be fake; while the lecture argues against all of them and points out some explanation about why the reasons aren't convincing.
First, the reading claims the distance of Maine and the Norse settlements is too much. Thus, the coin doesn't belong to them. However, the professor believes although the distance was great, there are many other objects except the coin that has been found in this kind of distance of which belong to Europeans. The professor believes, Indeed, native Americans who traveled a lot brought them to Maine.
Second, the passage states that no other coins have been found on the site that Europeans were settled. However, the lecturer argues against this reason by pointing out when they came back from Europe. Actually, they took back all of their valuable staff include their coins. Thus, they certainly bring silver coins with themselves.
Third, the reading claims the coins was useless for them because native Americans didn't recognize silver coins. Thereby, the didn't need them at all. However, the lecturer refutes this idea completely because the coins were attractive and beautiful that native Americans liked to have them. Indeed, they used them as beauty staff like neckless or jewelry. Therefore, Europeans could use coins to trade with native Americans.
Although the passage presents three reasons that claim the coin found in Maine is fake, the professor in the lecture opposes with all of them and believes that none of them are convincing.
