In this set of materials, both the reading and the lecturer discuss the problem of desertification which many trees dry and the lands become a desert. In this situation, scientists suggest that using a box-shaped device that collects water for trees can prevent desertification. Although the reading provides three theories to rejects the use of the box-shaped device, the speaker refutes these ideas through several reasons, which will be described in this report.
To start off, the passage points out that the cost of the box-shaped device is much expensive for each tree, so by this amount of money can growing millions of trees. The lecturer, in contrast, rejects this by claiming that by using a box-shaped device one tree become grow. And, when this tree become growing, people remove it, and they can use this box for other trees. She adds that this box can use for 22 times or more; hence, the price for each tree is not at a high level.
Going through the next approach, the reading passage states that local people who must maintain these devices would not accept to look after trees because they prefer to look after something that uses as a food source. However, the professor argues that putting some possible rewards or motivation for local people would be effective. For example, local people would allow using water which collects in the box-shape device for other plants like a vegetable. She adds that by growing trees local people allow using these branches for making a fire. These two reasons can motivate local people to take a part in a project.
To take into the end, although the passage says that water collects with this device is limited; hence, only small trees can use this amount of water, and it is not enough for big trees, the speaker disagrees by mentioning that this device helps young trees to grow long root. And, the long root can achieve a source of water which locates underground. Hence, trees can survive without this device. Furthermore, some research in the Sahara Desert shows that 90% of trees can live after removing this device.
