In the reading, the author brings three reasons to prove that environmental pollution is the main cause of the otter population decline. On the other hand, the professor criticizes it, maintaining the predation hypothesis seems the more likely the cause of the decline. She expands on her idea by providing three explanations.

First, the reading mentions that since there are many sources of industrial chemical pollution, sea otters are more likely to be affected by those harmful materials. On the contrary, the professor challenges this idea with an opposite viewpoint which posits that the sea otters are killed by predators because it is hard to find dead otter sea in the coastline, proving the reading's point to be untenable.

Second, the reading brings other sea mammals such as seals and sea lions as evidence to explain that sea otters are affected by pollution. This idea is at odds with the professor's view and she believes that human hunters are more likely to be the main reason of whale population's decline and orca prefers to hunt small sea mammals such as sea lions. The reading’s view, thus, does not hold up.

Finally, the reading holds that uneven pattern of the otter decline can be explained by the pollution hypothesis. Conversely, it is pointed out by the professor that orca predation could explain the uneven pattern of otter decline, as it depends on this fact that whether the location is accessible to mammals or not. For example, since the shallow location is not accessible to large orcas, sea otters have not declined in that area, which makes the point mentioned in the reading to be invalid.
