The article states that in the 1768 the sea cow that lived in the water around Bering Island became extinct and provides three theories concerning this extinction. However, the professor explains that these theories are not convincing and accordingly refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that the extinction cause of sea cow could be overhunted by groups of native Siberian people due to the fact that sea cows were a good source of food in a harsh environment. On the opposite, the lecture refutes this point by saying that the sea cow is a massive creature with ten tons weight and native Siberian people could feed on some a little number of sea cows for a month. Also, it mentions that they did not require for hunting more sea cows, thus this theory cannot be correct.
Second, the article posits that the sea cow population may have become extinct because of ecosystems disturbances and also it could bring about declining their main source of food. In contrast, the professor remarks that ecological change really happened before the extinction and it could affect their population, but it could not kill them. In addition, other marine animals did not become extinct like whales, which the professor explains that some people that caught fishes in this area did not report anything about disturbances. Also, in this situation food shortage could not be possible for extinction.
Last but not least, it is stated in the passage that European fur traders who came to the island could be the reason for extinction owing to the fact that they hunted them for their fur. Nonetheless, the professor opposes the point by saying that when European arrived at the island the sea cows population were small and their population was decreased and European traders arrived last in the century. Resultantly, it is not a good reason for sea cows extinction.
