The author in the reading passage holds that humpback whales are navigated by starts to migrate long distances, which the lecturer in the lecture expresses an opposite opinion.
To begin with, the author claims that humpback whales are so intelligent and cognitive that they can use star orientation to migrate. However, the lecturer refutes that there is no specific connection between intelligence and such celestial navigating ability because ducks, which are of average intelligence, are also able to use star navigation.
Moreover, the author believes that humpback whales cannot move in a straight line without the guidance of stars, the only external objects in the ocean. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts that it can be the earth magnetic field that allows them to stay on the track. Humpback whales have a magic bio-magnitude component inside their bodies that makes them sensitive to the magnetic field, and thus direct the path.
Finally, the author puts forward that the spy-hopping, an unusual behavior of humpback whales looking upward, indicates that the navigating information comes from the stars. Instead, the lecturer retorts that the spy-hoping is not exclusively used for seeking stars because sharks do it to hunt food and they do not migrate. Besides, the fact that spy-hopping occurs mostly in the daytime when there is not any sigh of stars further diminishes the author’s hypothesis.
