TPO10 - decreasing in otter population
In the reading, the author claims that the principal reason for decline in sea otter population, which is small mammal living in coastal regions, is polluted environment by pointing out 3 reasons of support. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the professor in the listening casts doubt on what is presented in the text and states that indeed the predation is a major reason for this population decrease and gives some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that since the source of the contamination such as oil rigs and industrial chemical pollution existed along the Alaskan coast. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that if such contaminated substances were the main responsible for this phenomenon, scientists would have found the death bodies of the otters, but it did not happen nonetheless. As a matter of fact, infections leaves the bodies and therefore, the predator hypothesis is more consistence with the evidence.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that some other mammals species such as seals and sea lion died concurrently with disappearing the sea otters. On the other hand, the professor disputes this point by clarifying to the fact that although orcas incline to catch other larger prey, there was another hunter which is human. Consequently, lacking the large animals, orcas tended to eat smaller mammals such as sea lion, seals as well as otters.
Finally, the author assert having spread the pollution unevenly in various regions, some environmental elements produce distinct pattern in different locations. The professor, though, dismisses it by subscribing to the point that this proof provide further legitimacy for the predation theory. Actually, this incongruity revealed the close dependency between the decline in otter population and multiplicity of orcas. The more easily the orcas have accessible to otters, the greater drop in number of them, hence the orcas cannot swim in shallow and rocky waters the population remains stable in those areas.
