TPO 12 - Jane Austen Portrait
In the reading passage, the author claims that a full-length portrait of a teenager girl is the picture of Jane Austen, who was an illustrious English novelist, by pointing out 3 reasons of support. However, finding all the ideas implausible and questionable, the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text and states some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that Austen's family allowed utilizing this portrait as a depiction attributing to Austen. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that this authorization cannot demonstrate whether it is Austen's image or not since Jane Austen had been died at least 70 years before her relatives made this declaration. Indeed, having not seen Jane themselves, they could not contend with certainty that this portrait is Jane Austen.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that the resemblance of Cassandra's sketch and the portrait can provide further legitimacy to the owner of the picture. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying that it could be some of her relatives. In fact, so large was Austen's extended family including her cousins and other females that they could have had so many similarities with Jane. Therefore, it is possible that the subject of the portrait was the distance niece of Jane.
Finally, the author asserts that the style of the painting is another proof of its subject since it is traced back to 1790s, the time that Jane was a teenager. The professor, thought, dismisses it by subscribing to the fact that the other evidence shows the date later than that time. For instance, the stamp at the back of the painting indicates that the blank canvas sold by William Legg in London when Jane Austen was about 27 years old. This time is much older than the age of the teenager girl in the picture.
