Some students like classes where teachers lecture (do all of the talking) in class. Other students prefer classes where the students do some of the talking. Which type of class do you prefer? Give specific reasons and details to support your choice
Lecturers in schools deliver lessons according to the guidelines the school states or to the method the lecturer chooses to adopt. Some lectures are done in a way that makes the teachers do all the talking, however, others lectures deliver in a way that allows interaction between the teacher and the students. Students are exposed to various lecture styles and a student’s preference is different from others. I belong to the group that prefer classes that involve students doing some of the talking.
Firstly, the most important reason I prefer this method is the interactions it provides. It allows students interact with tutors during classes, furthermore, it provides opportunities to ask questions during the lesson, when a concept is not explicit. If it’s just the teacher talking, there’s inability to pause the lecture to ask important questions, which could lead to compounding of difficult ideas.
Secondly, this method of teaching boosts the students’ confidence. They are conscious of the fact that they can halt the lecture for a while to ask about a phenomenon that’s not understood. In addition, through interaction, a student’s delivery and rapport increases and this consequently increases his confidence.
Meanwhile, this style of teaching, which allows both the students and the lectures do the talking, makes the pace of the class slow. It cannot be over emphasized that the understanding of the lecture is more important than the number of grounds covered during the class.
Both methods of teaching have their pros and cons, but the most essential part of a class is the passing of ideas to the students. Therefore, the teacher should put the understanding of the students first.
