Overall, the percentage of women in 5 countries participating in parliament showed an increase over the period, especially the UK with a drastic improvement.
In Germany, starting as the highest among 5 nations with about 33%, the proportion experienced a slight rise and ended at about 12% in 2012. Beginning at only 27%, the percentage of women in Italian parliament dramatically ascended to 38% in 2008 and reached the peak in 2012 with 40%. In France, the proportion showed a steady increase to 32% in 2012, 7% higher than that in 2000.
In 2000, the percentage of parliamentary women In the UK was the lowest among 5 nations with only 3%. However it experienced a drastic rise in the following years, skyrocketing to 18% in the end of the period which was 6 times more than that in 2000. In contrast, after reaching the peak in 2004 with 25%, the percentage of Belgium took a marginal plunge over the period, falling from about 17% on 2000 to the same proportion of that in the UK in 2000.
