The bar chart gives some information about the proportion of British and Welsh families, which are living in owned and rented houses from 1918 to 2011. As an overall trend, the number of rented households decreased considerably whereas the number of owned houses increased substantially throughout the given period.
According to the bar chart, the ratio of families, which lived in their own accomodation doubled from about 23% in 1918 to 40% in 1961. After this, the percentage of owned houses became equal to the percentage of rented houses and both reached almost 50% in 1971.Over the next years, there was a gradual growth of numbers of self-owned houses with slight fluctations and peaked at about 73% in 2001. In contrast, the proportion of rental households declined hugely from its maximum level of 70% in 1918 to the minimum level of nearly 30% in 2001, but afterwards there was a minimal climb of approximately 38% in 2011.
