the reading and the lecture is both about whether the American companies will seek Eco certification for their woods or not. The author of the reading believes that America will certify their wood. The lecturer casts doubt on the claim made in the article. He thinks that America will eventually seek certification for their wood.
First of all the author points out that American consumers are too much exposed to advertisements and do not value or pay any attention to them. Furthermore, they do not trust any claims made in the advertisements. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that Americans believe that not all advertisements are the same. Furthermore, he argues that they do have confidence in certified independent agencies which are trustworthy.
Secondly, the author contends that eco certified wood is more expensive that uncertified one. The article notes that to earn ecocertification the company must pay for business inspection by certified agency. Therefore, increasing the cost of certified wood. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggest that increase in price matters only when there is a significant difference between the price. For instance there is only 5 percent increase in the value of eco certified wood and hence this small difference does not matter for the American consumer. He further elaborates this by mentioning that the Americans also value the preservation of environment and hence will be in favor of the Eco certified wood.
Finally author states that certification will only make sense when product will be sold abroad as the American companies sell most of their wood to the large consumer in united states. The lecturer on the other hand posits that if the American companies will not sell eco certified wood even in their own country then foreign competition will arise and start crowding the US market offering eco certifies wood that US does not.
