The lecture and the reading passage are both about origin of an old manuscript. While the reading passage states that there are several theories that demonstrate the origin of this ancient manuscript the lecture contradicts these claims and provides evidence to the contrary.
First, the author argues that one theory is that because of scientific subject and secret code of the manuscript, it belongs to Anthomy Ascham. Hence those plants that mentioned in the manuscript are similar with those in Ascham's book. Conversely, the lecturer brings the idea that Ascham was an ordinary scientist and the complexity of the manuscript does not seems to his work.
Second, the passage holds the view that based on the other theories, the manuscript is a fake and has not meaning full context and someone made it to sell for money to a rich people. In contrast, the professor underlines the fact that it is not convincing theory because the 16 century's people were not be so complex and they didn't need to make such a complicated book for sell to someone.
Furthermore, according to the passage the last theory is that the handwritten book is a modern fake created by Voynich. However, the professor makes it clear that the date of materials that used for the book can be estimated and the ink and paper materials belong a bout more than 400 years old so, this theory is not compelling.
