Undoubtedly, technology has changed our lives in several ways. One of the most important advances has been in terms of communication. Currently, people have the facility to be aware of what is happening worldwide. Therefore, I personally believe that is important to be well-informed about events around the world although they do not affect our lives. I feel this way for two main reasons which I will explore in the following essay.
First of all, one of the great advance in technology has been the television which provides people with information in every part of the world. Besides, according to several studies people spend around three or four hours per day watching TV. By doing this, people cannot only acquire new information but also learn which most of the time are the topic of conversation among people. But when there is no efficient use of television people can also be misinformed. My own experience is a compelling example of this. Two months ago, I had a meeting with my friends from high school when the main topic of the conversation was political problems in the United States. Because I had not been watching television for many months, I did not have information for involved in the discussion which made me feel uncomfortable. However, this reality changed when I started to use not specific TV but the internet for being aware of relevant events. Having incorporated this activity in my schedule, I acquired new information and when my ex-classmates organized another meeting I was able to contribute with information in the discussion.
Secondly, another benefit from being aware of the situation in our surroundings is that it provides people with some necessary strategies for overcoming any sudden incident. When people are informed about climatic changes and their effect, it helps them to be alert in case of an emergency. For instance, two years ago the worst catastrophe happened to my country, an earthquake which not only destroyed the building but also several families. This incident became worse because people did not know how to react to these types of situations. But if people had been well-informed about mechanisms to react and reduce consequences in those cases, the effects would have been obviously less. This type of information that people need is to transmit by a program of television. Therefore, we can conclude that being informed may help citizens prevent certain disasters caused by unexpected situations.
In conclusion, for all the reasons that I mentioned above, I strongly consider that people should spend a little of their time watching TV but in productive programs which implies a proper use of it.
