because of climate change, more and more land that was once used to
Both the passage and the listening materials are about a box-shaped container which condenses vapor for water to help young trees in desertification areas to survive. The reading believes that this device is not practical because of its high cost, difficulty of maintainence and limited ability of preserving water. However, the professor of the lecture disagrees.
First, the reading claims that millions of trees are needed and since each container costs 25 dollars, it is too expensive to adopt such solutions. In contrast, the lecturer argues that the average cost of each device is actually low, and the reason is that the containers can be removed once the young trees grow bigger and be reused for more than 20 times.
In responsing to the second point made in the reading passage--that people in the desertified areas are reluctant to maintain the devices because they cannot help yied food--the professor proposed two rewards that local people can receive by taking care of these devices: more food and more fire wood. More food can be obtained by using the devices to collect water for plants like vegetables; more firewood can be collected from the branches of the grown-up trees that benefited from the protection of the devices.
Third, the reading proposed a potential problem of using such devices: that the device's capacity is not enough for bigger trees. The professor explains that the bigger trees actually can get enough water from underground because they grow long roots which can reach moist soild underneath. She further proves her point by giving the example of the trees in Saharah desert. In fact, 90% of those trees used these devices lived more than 2 years in Saharah.
