TPO-22 - Integrated Writing Task
The passage discusses ethanol fuel and states that ethanul is not a suitable replacement for gasolin for several reasons. In contrast, the professor rejects all three reasons by stating that ethanol is a good alternative for fossil fuels like gasoline. Consequently, the teacher provides three reasons to support her idea.
First, the passage asserts that increasing the use of ethanol cannot help to solve environmental problems like global warming. Like gasoline, ethanol release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. So, the ethanol is another source of pollution. However, the lecture refutes this reason by explaining that for producing ethanol there is need to plants like corns. So, these plants during their growth time will absorb carbon dioxide. As a result, teh amount of this gas will decrease in the environment.
Second, the reading claims that producing huge amounts of ethanol will decrease the plants available for feeding animals. While the professor rebuts this reason by describing that for manufacturing ethanol they yse cellulose which is a part of plant that cannot eat by animals. Cellulose has a rigid structure and is not eatable. So, using these rigid parts to produce fuel will not reduce the food source of animals.
Third, based on tha passage the cost of ethanol cannot compete with the cost of gasoline. Farthermore, the only reason that the prices of these fuel sources are similar is because of the government's help. If the government eliminates the subsisies of the ethanol, the price of this fuel will increase quicly. The professor confirms that it is right, but she explains that by govenment's help the production of the ethanol will increase and these increases lead to decrease in the cost of ethanol. Eventually, ethanol will compete with gasoline as a clean fuel.
