The table shows forested land in millions of hectares in different parts of the world.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The table provides information about the change in the forest area in 6 regions over a 15-year period.
Overall, it is clear that the main trend was for the forested land to shrink, with the exception of Asia and Europe. Also, it is noteworthy that Oceania was home to the smallest area of forest in the time span.
Looking at the table in detail reveals that South America had lost 64 million hectares of forest, dropping to 882 million hectares in 2005. There was a comparable reduction in the forested area in Africa, from 749 to 691 million hectares. The drop was less pronounced in North America, where only 3 million hectares were lost, and in Oceania, from 199 million to 197 million over 15 years.
By contrast, there was an overall increase in the forest area in Asia (576 million in 1990 rising to 584 million hectares in 2005) although the figure dropped slightly in the interim (570 million hectares in 2000). Europe was the only region to exhibit a consistent, albeit mild, increase, upping from 989 million to reach 1001 million hectares of forested land in the period.
