The reading passage discusses several criticisms about the turtle excluder device, which helps turtle escape from the net in which trapped. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on the reasons proposed by the reading passage.
First, the author argues that the number of turtles caught by each shrimper is rare, So it is not cost-effective for shrimpers to use TED device which helps not only turtles but also shrimps to run away from the net. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that since they are many boats in the coasts, the negative effect will sum to a high degree and will cause harm to the turtle population which is already rare and scarce.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that other methods can be used for saving these species, for example, limiting the time which shrimpers can keep their nets under water. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that since the number of shrimpers is high, it is not possible to monitor each of boats in the sea to identify whether they are following the time limit rule. It is more efficient for them to use TED and check each boat includes it at first.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that as some kinds of turtles have large bodies, the current TED device is not appropriate for helping them, and they will trap in the net. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that if in some areas this problem occurred, they can modify the TED size and use the larger one to prevent this problem.
