ways to preserve toreyya
The reading is about the way to prevent Torreya taxifolia from distinction, and the author gives three ways. However, the professor states that these ways won’t be effective and refutes each of the three ways.
The first way the author provides is reestablish torreya in the same location. The author says that the area torreya have thrived in has a wet and cool microclimate, which is very favorable for torreya to live. The professor refutes this point by saying that climate change over the area has changed the wet and cool area into drier one. He thinks the climate of the area is no longer suitable for torreya.
The second way is to transfer torreya to a different location. The professor gives an example of the black locust tree to oppose this point. According to the professor, the black locust tree moved to a new area totally destructed the new environment. He states that in some cases the moved tree couldn’t even live, so the change of the new environment is unpredictable.
The last way is preserve torreya in a research center. However, the professor says that the diversity of an environment in the research center is too small to prevent torreya from dying out of deseases. We also learn from the lecture that living in a great diversity is necessary for plants to survive some deseases.
For these discussions above, the professor states that the three solutions given by the author won’t be effective to preserve torreya.
