International migration in UK
The chart below demonstrates the number about immigration, emigration and net migration in UK between 1999 and 2008
There was a slight increase in both UK’s immigration and emigration over the period shown, but the figures of immigration was significantly higher. The peak of net migration is recorded in 2004.
In 1999, there were more than 450.000 people come to live in UK, while the emigration stood at just under 300.000 people. The figures for net migration was around 170.000 and it remained steady until 2003. Immigration witnessed a dramatic rise by nearly 140.000 from 1999 to 2004, but there was a much smaller rise in emigration. Net migration reach a high of approximately 250.000 people in 2004.
After 2004, the immigration remained high, but the number of people who left UK fluctuated. The emigration hit a low in 2007, before peaked at around 420.000 people in the last year of the period. As a result, the net migration figure went up to around 220.000 in 2007, then dropped to about 160.000 in 2008.
