TPO 23-task1

The focus of both the reading and lecture is on the possible reasons for the decline in yellow cedar. Despite the author's statement that explains three reasons for this decline, the lecturer holds an opposing view. He is of the opinion that these reasons are not enough and the results obtained from these reasons are uncertain. He brings up a number of contradictory point in this rejection.
First of all, the author holds the idea that cedar bark beetle, a type of insect, is one of the hypothesis in the decline of the cedar trees. It is mentioned that the beetle larvae eat the wood and kill the trees. The lecturer denies this notion and states that healthy trees are resistant to insects than other species. This due to the poisonous chemical in their bark and leaves that kills the insects. Furthermore, he argues that the beetle attack the damaged trees which are already dead and cannot defend themselves by producing the poison.
Secondly, the writer contends that brown bears eat the tree bark by clawing them. The article notes that the excessive feeding of the bears weakens the tree and kills them. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that bears feed of some trees, so they cannot be responsible in the overall tree's decline. He elaborates on this by explaining that in some islands there is no sign on bears but there is still a decline in the cedar tree.
Finally, it is claimed in the article that frost damage due to climate change might be another cause of the tree's decline. The author establishes that changes in the pattern of temperature can make the tree roots to grow in the late winter rather than in the early spring which can contribute to the freezing of the roots and killing the tree. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the author does not consider one important fact. He puts forth the notion that the lower elevation trees have warmer temperature and the higher elevation ones have colder weather. The observations have shown that more trees in the lower elevation are dying compared with the higher elevation trees.
