TPO 09- Car manufacturers and governments have been eagerly seeking a replacement for the automobile's main source of power, the internal-combustion engine. By far the most promising alternative source of energy for cars is the hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine, which uses hydrogen to create electricity that, in turn, powers the car. Fuel-cell engines have several advantages over internal-combustion engines and will probably soon replace them.
The reading and writing both discuss about the efficiency of hydrogen based engines over the combustion engines. The passage highlights the three main advantages of using fuel cell as an energy source. This is challenged by the speaker for the following reasons.
Firstly, the author claims that unlike the hydrogen based engine which uses renewable source for its production the combustion engines use non renewable sources, diesel for its ignition. The lecturer however states that the hydrogen is not easily available since it needs to be obtained in a highly pure state that requires exquisite technology for its production. Likewise, it needs to be stored under very cold conditions of negative temperatures which is difficult to maintain.
Secondly, hydrogen fuel was claimed to have no pollution troubles in contast to the oil run machines burn carbon dioxide and harm the air. This is also rebutted by the lecturer. He explains that hydrogen is produced by the process of purification which needs burning coal or oil which generates byproducts that are deterrent to air.
Thirdly, the statement hydrogen fuel being economical when compared to combustion engines in the passage is argued by the speaker. He posits that its not cheaper to make hydrogen since it need a very rare and expensive metal which is platinum. Even Though efforts are being made to replace platinum with a more affordable material none has been succesfull. In these way the lecturer casts doubt on the suggestions made by the author of the passage.
