A glance at the two pie charts provided reveals the relative popularity of activities done in free-time in the USA in 1999 and 2009.
Of these activities, walking was the most widely enjoyed in both years, at 29 percent in 1999 and a slightly higher 31 percent in 2009. Yet, by far the most significant change to take place during this period was the increased popularity of swimming. From 1999, the figures had added 9 percent to stand at 18% in 2009. Meanwhile, yoga was replaced by weightlifting after a decade, in 2009 the percentage of people who liked weightlifting in leisure time was 10 percent, it was twice to compared to 5 percent of yoga in 1999. Camping also had just a small growth, from 8 percent in 1999 to 9 percent in 2009.
In stark contrast, however, all other activities decreased in popularity. Aerobics - which was the third most widely enjoyed pastime in 1985, accounting for 13 percent of respondents - slipped to a mere 4 percent in 2009. Likewise, there were also considerable decreases in the popularity ratings of jogging and bicycling.
