Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading is mainly about criticizing TED, which is a device to protect turtles from capturing by shrimp – fishing boats. However, the lecturer finds the author's explanations dubious and casts a shadow of doubt on them. She believes that it is vital equipment to protect turtles.
To begin with, The reading asserts that the number of turtle caught by shrimp boats is rare, and if they use TED, many shrimps will escape through turtle passage. Thus, there are not many benefits to using TED. On the contrary, the lecturer brings up the point that there are a lot of shrimp boats are fishing, and if all of them catch a turtle, thousand of turtle would be caught at the end of the month. Additionally, she claims that the number of shrimp escaping from TED is not considerable, and it does not affect the shrimp industry.
Furthermore, the author states that if the shrimp boat decreases the amount of time holding nets underwater, there would be an efficient way to release turtle as soon as possible. In contrast, the lecturer dismisses this issue due to the fact that shrimp boats are not being monitored by the government properly because there are are many boats, so they don’t have enough time to control how much time they put their net underwater. Besides, the lecturer discusses that they should be enforced to use TED in their nets.
Finally, the reading argues that TEDs are not sufficient for bigger species such as loggerhead and leatherback turtles. They are not able to get out of TED's passage. Conversely, the lecturer underlines the fact that TED is easy to be modified. They can produce larger passages to provide enough space to escape larger turtles.
