The chart below compares levels of recycling, as well as some less environmentally friendly forms of waste management, in fifteen European countries.
The provided chart depicts the different ways of waste management among 15 states in the European continent.
Overall, it can be said that the landfills and the incinerators still play a leading role in the more the half of the countries under examination. According to the study, all the Southern European countries treat their garbage using the landfills, and the United Kingdom, Finland and Ireland follow this trend. The incinerators process almost 60% of the waste in Denmark and Luxemburg, and France uses almost equally those systems and the landfills.
Speaking about the most eco-friendly method, only a few countries are able to process the majority of the garbage by recycling or composting. Austria is leading the rank with more than 60% of wastes recycled, and Netherlands is in the second place with slightly less than 45%. Finally, it is worth noticing that, while "other methods" of waste management are almost insignificant in all the countries, they are quite important in Germany, where around 10% of the garbage is processed in those unspecified ways.
