Genetic modification
The reading and the lecturer are both about the use of genetic trees. The author of the reading feels that there are three advantages on using genetic change to improve the growth of trees. The lecture challenges the claim made by the author. He is of the opinion that these advantages are faulty.
To begin with, the writer mentions that use trees that are genetic modified might be more resistant under severe conditions. The article gives an example of a new papaya trees that were developed to resist an infection of virus that had damaged the native papaya tree population. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. The professor mentions that a particular type of new tree might survive under the attack of insect or severe climate but not all of them.
Secondly, the author suggests that this new type of trees brings a large number of economic benefits once the investment made by farmer will return faster. The lecture, however, refute the claim by mentioning that the costs of these tree is really high because various tests needs to be done before they plant the seeds, and also because the farmers have to pay for a company that had developed these seeds every time they will plant it.
Third, the article mentions that genetically modified trees might reduce deforestation of native trees once they are use to made firewood. In contrast, the lecturer`s position is that using this kind of trees damages might increase once they grow in a aggressive way. He also notes that genetically modified trees will compete water, sun light and nutrients with native trees.
