TOEFL TPO 36 Cloud Seeding
The reading and the lecture are both about cloud seeding, which is a combination of chemicals and water to help farmers to reduce hail damage in crops. The writer states that it is a good solution to solve this issue. The professor contrasts all the reasons given by the author.
Even though cloud seeding may work in the laboratory, the lecturer says that it’s almost impossible to have the same results in the real world. For instance, combining chemicals with cold water vapor in the atmosphere may cause drought or other kinds of natural disasters.
Despite the fact that some Asian countries tested and got good results, it doesn’t mean that it will work in the US. The test was performed/done in an urban area and the combination of chemicals, water and pollution, produced good results. She also states that there is no guarantee that it would work in areas without pollution.
Finally, the author explains that a few local studies did a demonstration using this technique and caused a reduction in damage when compared with previous years. The lecturer posits that it’s not true because many other areas close by also had a decrease in damage.
