lEGALIZING RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA

Even though the question of legalizing recreational marijuana use has been debated over a prolonged period, the issue still causes a lot of controversies. While the governments are cracking down on marijuana use, a cohort of people has tried it or has been using it regularly. Is there any sense in prohibiting it at all? Opponents of legalization come up with strong arguments against this idea, contending that marijuana use harms the user both physically and mentally and should be eradicated. Proponents, on their behalf, provide an impressive list of advantages among which there is economic growth, a decrease in street crime, and safer use.
Some people believe that legalizing marijuana might give a boost to the economy, first of all, by creating thousands of jobs and, secondly, by collecting in tax revenues. Industries such as tourism, banking, construction, real estate, and a number of others are also likely to reap benefits from legal marijuana.
However, other people argue that the societal steep costs of marijuana outweigh its tax revenues. For instance, the costs related to increased emergency room visits, medical care, addiction treatment, adverse impact on health from secondhand smoking far exceed revenues legal drugs raise. These people believe that marijuana is generally destructive to society.
To sum up, on the one hand, marijuana legalization is believed to add billions of dollars to the economy, on the other hand, it is associated with more medical emergencies, hospital visits, and treatment at the expense of taxpayers.
The legalization of marijuana seems more beneficial to me and the arguments are more convincing. I am strongly convinced that it is bound to give a push to economic development and take money away from drug cartels, organized crime, and street gangs. Moreover, there is solid scientific evidence that marijuana does not cause any addiction or lung illnesses, unlike tobacco or alcohol.
