The diagram below shows the carbon cycle

Essay topics:

The diagram below shows the carbon cycle.

The process diagram illustrates the cycle of carbon that’s present in abundance in our atmosphere.

Overall, the carbon cycle is composed of two smaller sub-cycles. The first one involves uptake by plants and animals which eventually leads to release of carbon into atmosphere again. The other one involves carbon consumption by ocean that is ultimately converted into limestone and shells.

So in the first sub-cycle, the carbon dioxide in the air can be taken up by either animals or plants. If it’s taken up by the animals via consumption of plants, it can either be released back into atmosphere due to respiration or animals can decompose. On the other hand, if the uptake is by the plants through photosynthesis, it can either by consumed by animals, as mentioned earlier, or it can also decompose like animals.

Once decomposed, these can turn into fossils through a process known as fossilization. These fossils are then dug up later in the form of oil, coal and gas. After extraction and processing, it can be used for different purposes such as to run cars that use combustion engines. These cars then pollute the air with carbon dioxide and carbon once again reaches the atmosphere. The second sub-cycle involves carbon consumption by the ocean which can convert it into limestone and shells through a process called sedimentation.
