The graph below shows average carbon dioxide emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graph highlights data about the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by people in four different countries over a 40-year period, from 1967 to 2007.
What stands out from the graph is that there were upward trends in carbon dioxide emissions in Portugal and Italy, while the UK and Sweden saw the opposite. Moreover, the United Kingdom had always been the country with the highest figure during the whole period in question.
In 1967, a person in Portugal would emit over 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide, which was the lowest at that time. Following this, there was a significant rise of about 4 metric tons over the next 40 years, at which point the figure leveled off at over 5 metric tons. This rate of increase was matched by that of Italy since the average carbon dioxide per person here also saw a substantial increase between 1967 and 1997. Subsequently, the figure remained stable at just under 8 metric tons until 2007.
However, if we look at Sweden, the amount of CO2 emitted went up sharply in the first ten years, after which it started to fall considerably by approximately 5 metric tons, and finally hit a trough at the end of the period. As regards the United Kingdom, the figure remained constant at under 11 metric tons until 1997, this was followed by a gradual decline till 2007.
