The line graph provides information on the number of people in Australia who speak Chinese, Arabic, Italian, or Greek as their first native language from the year of 1986 to 2011.
Overall, the numbers of people who spoke Chinese and Arabic continued to rise, while the other group consisting of Italian and Greek speakers dropped over the years.
The community who used Chinese and Arabic as their mother tongue increased through the times. In 1986, only about 120,000 people spoke Chinese. But in 2011, the numbers had been through a considerable upward trend and reached about 350,000 people. The situation also occurred with the Arabic native speakers. Specifically, the community had risen from 50,000 people in 1986 to 150,000 people in 2011.
In the meantime, the speakers of two European languages rapidly fell after 1986. The native Greek speakers dramatically dropped from about 240,000 to about 180,000 people within 25 years. People who used Italian as their mother tongue also went through reduction. The period from 1986 to 2004 saw a fall from 150,000 to 120,000 people in the Italian native speaking community. Although the number steadily stayed at 120,000 people until 2011, Italian still remained at the bottom position compared to the other 3.
