The reading and the lecture are both about tuna farming offshore. Whereas the author states that there are some concerns and criticisms about tuna farming and lists out three for support, the lecturer refutes each of the problems. He claims that there are practical solutions to all problems mentioned, which are illustrated in the following essay.
First, the author claims that female tuna fish do not lay eggs in captivity, therefore farmers should hunt many wild young tuna to raise in cages. it will decrease the population of wild tuna. However, the lecturer disputes this idea. He suggests that there is a good solution to this problem. Furthermore, he mentions that by injecting special hormones to adult females in captivity, they will lay eggs; therefore, there is no need to hunt many young from open oceans. In addition, these hormones do not impose any risk to the consumers' health.
Second, the reading argues that farming tuna will be expensive since their highly protein-rich food, produced from smaller fishes, costs a lot. Nevertheless, the professor opposes this argument. He posits that there are cheaper foods produced from special plants rich in protein, therefore, they do not have to produce food from expensive materials. Evidently, cheaper food results in cheaper tuna fish as the final product.
Third, the passage states that in-cage tuna are vulnerable to infestation with a specific parasite that feeds on them. As a result, it weakens fishes, slows down their growth, or even kills them. On the contrary, the lecturer rejects this statement by saying that there is an affordable treatment for this infestation. moreover, he posits that some researches showed that the mentioned blood flukes stop activity in deep waters far from shore. Therefore, by establishing farms in further and deeper regions they can withstand this disease and continue growing.
