It can be seen that a number of changes were made to the shape and the length of the foot. Also, the toes disappeared one by one to become a hoof.
Eohippus, which flourished 40 million years ago is much smaller than the modern horse. Moreover, there were four thin phalanges on each paw so Eohippus is multi-toed species and its foot was relatively similar to the primate’s hand. 30 million years ago, Mesihippus appeared and grew slightly in size. In this period, it only had three toes with the middle one looking like the modern hoof.
In the next 15 million years, Merychippus emerged and looked way more like a horse. The three-toed foot still remained but it slowly became the hoof. Finally, the modern horse underwent significant changes through time and almost doubled in size. The foot of it evolved completely into the hoof.
