The well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
The statement asserts that when many of the general populace question authority, the well-being of society is enhanced. Admittedly, interfering in some of the government policies hamper the long-term goals that leaders have in mind. However, in my opinion, the statement rightly states the need to question the people in power for the nation to thrive.
The first perspective to take into account is transparency and awareness of politicians or leaders of the nation toward the problems the people of the country are facing. It is when denizens of the country question the integrity and competence of the people in power, most of the leaders sitting far away and unaware of the everyday problems of the poor, minorities, and the general public can be made aware of them. Transparency between the people and the government of the nation is one of the most vital factors affecting the trust in the leaders and consequently the possibility for the leaders to be re-elected for the next term. By questioning the merits of the policies, amendments in existing laws, or any new law introduced, this transparency can be maintained.
Secondly, it will avert leaders from doing nefarious activities in the light of self-interest which usually happens when a person is in power for a long time. If the government fails to justify its policies, it would be apparent that it's not going to be in power for a long time, or even can be thrown out without ending the current tenure. Consequently, this will lead the government to not only maintain the integrity and general welfare of the general populace but also will motivate them to do better. There are so many issues to tackle for the authorities of any nation such as unemployment, better health and living standards, education, foreign relations, etc. In an environment where people can question the laws and policies implemented by the government to tackle these issues, the people with authority will be well aware of the needs and demands of their people. History is replete with examples of nationwide movements that lead to dramatic changes in the traditional long-standing government policies. For instance, the movement for women's rights or women's empowerment allowed women to go out of their houses, and contribute toward the betterment of the nation and their own growth. Similarly, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi's civil disobedience movements in U.S. and India respectively lead to a better life for the then oppressed people.
However, one cannot deny the fact that there are certain laws where excessive questioning from the people may prove counter-productive. For example, protesting against laws for compulsory education for children, minimum wages, or higher tax rates for the wealthy would not lead to any fruitful results. These and a lot of general laws and policies are implemented for the general welfare of the nation and should be followed without a doubt.
In conclusion, it is propitious for the growth and prosperity of the nation that people question the authority. However, it must be reasonable, and should not be motivated by only the interests of a particular group or section of the nation. There is no need for either or solution to evaluate the given claim. In fact, freedom of speech to question the authority while ensuring that it is well-reasoned and justifiable concerns would be the best approach to achieve transparency, and will only contribute to the well-being of the society.
