Spartacus hero story
The reading passage explores why Spartacus was viewed as a hero in ancient Roman history, and several reasons are given in support of this statement. As reasonable as these points seem, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on them, indicating that they rely on inaccurate stories.
To begin with, the author suggests that it was Spartacus' desire to return to their hometown that fascinated the Romans the most. Conversely, disputing the reading's point, the lecturer cites some pieces of evidence as proof that Spartacus was actually marching toward the city, showing that they are interested in acquiring revenge and wealth. Therefore, the lecturer dismisses the initial goal mentioned in the passage.
Second, even though the author claims that Spartacus fought against a large Roman army with ill-equipped people, which earned him admiration, the lecturer argues that it is a misconception. This is because the Romans didn't consider them a serious threat initially, and thus didn't send the best army. in addition, the lecturer mentions that Spartacus would be readily defeated once the Romans send their military elites. Accordingly, she believes that Spartacus was unlikely to have military genius.
Last but not least, the lecturer acutely identifies a weakness in the article that Spartacus was regarded as the early human right advocate since he wanted to liberate all slaves. She points out that, in the 18th century, anti-slavery playwriters made Spartacus an inspirational character in a play, in which this character liberated all slaves. As a result, without any historical evidence, the lecturer has no confidence in this story.
