One chart illustrates the trends of how many families owned electrical appliances in a particular country between 1920 and 2019. The other represents number of hours per week spent on household chores during the same period.
In general, not many families used to have fridge and vacuum cleaner. But they became increasingly reliable towards the 21st century. Another interestingly fact is that nowadays, people have relied on appliances and reduced their hours for housework significantly.
Washing machine had the highest ownership (40%) in 1920. The figure improved dramatically to 70% in the first 40 years. Despite declining slightly in 1980, it rebounded back to roughly 75% in 2019. Regarding refrigerator, merely any family bought it at first. The same goes for vacuum cleaner which was owned by only one-third of home. However, both got consistently popular and became must-have household appliances in 2019.
On average, in 1920, families dedicated 50 hours for chores. There was a constant drop to just around 15 in 1980 and it levelled off until 2000. Following this, it dipped marginally to 10 hours and ended the period.
