Overall, it is apparent that the percentage of population in four countries witnesses an upward trend over the period. Moreover, Malaysia has the greatest proportion among the four countries, whereas the opposite was true for Thailand.
Looking first into Malaysia, 30% of total population lived in cities in 1970. Thereafter, this figure consecutively rose to reach a peak at 80% in 2020 and being predicted to marginally increase until 2040, at about 82%. There was a similar pattern in the percentage of Indonesia, commenced at just 13% before drastically rose to more than two fifth of population resided in cities in 2010. Additionally, the figure for Indonesia is projected to reach 60% in 2040.
Turning to other countries, the percentage of Philippines witnessed significant volatility, started at 31% prior to suddenly growing to 50% 20 years later. Afterwards, there was a plunge in the total population living in cities in Philippines to 41% in 2010 and this country is forecasted to bounce back to 50% in 2040. Finally, the figure for Thailand levelled off at 29% from 1990 to 2020 and would considerably rise to nearly a half of the whole population in 2040.
