There was a similarity in the percentage of city inhabitants in the Philipines and Malaysia in 1970, at approximately 30%. The two countries' figures continued to witness a slight rise of almost 20% over the next 20 years before the Philippines' population is projected to reach a peak at above 80% in 2040. Similarly, the proportion of citizens in Malaysia is expected to rise to around 55% in the same year.
Both Thailand and Indonesia experienced a growth of about 15% in the population percentage from 1970 to 2000. The proportion of people living in urban areas in Thailand reached a plateau at 30% in the next 30 years prior to being predicted to go up to just under 50% by the end of the period. Meanwhile, the figure for Indonesia is forecasted to go through a dramatic increase to roughly 60% in 2024, being the second most populated country.
