The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of enery in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line chart illustrates how much energy has been consumed since 1980 in the USA, categorised in different sources of fuel, and the future estimations by 2030.
Overall, energy consumptions by fossil fuels have had a tendency to be upward while the amounts of power consumed by using renewable sources of energy have witnessed a steady trend. It is also worth pointing out that petrol and oil have been the most dominant type of fuel, in terms of consuming energy.
To begin with, in 1980, the amount of energy consumed by using petrol and oil stood at about 35 quadrillion units. Despite a mild fluctuation in the next 15 years, this figure have experienced a significant rise since then and is expected to reach nearly 50 quadrillion units by 2030, remaining the highest number among all fuels. Also, it is reported that the energy consumption of natural gas was only around 20 quadrillion units, which was higher than the figure for coal by 5 quadrillion units initially. Up to now, natural gas indicator has shown a noticeable fluctuation, reaching approximately 23 quadrillion units whereas the figure for coal has increased steeply, surpassing its gas counterparts and becoming the second-highest number. It is projected that by 2030, both quantites of energy consumed by coal and natural gas will have continued with its current trends.
Turning to the other set of data, within the first decade of the period, energy consumed by nuclear, solar/wind and hydropower was all recorded at roughly 5 quadrillion units. Until now, meanwhile both indicators of nuclear and solar wind have risen slightly before flattening out, the figure for hydropower has dropped illegibly to just about 3 quadrillion units. Furthermore, in the future, the energy consumptions of these 3 fuels are predicted to stabilised.
