The bar chart illustrates the annual changes that have taken place in the number of rentals and sales (in three different formats) of films from a store from 2002 to 2011. Overall, while the annual number of film rentals and VHS sales went down, the upward trends happened in the sales of Blu-ray and DVD. Although the sales of DVDs witnessed a decrease during the second half of the period, DVDs were still the most popular option.
Regarding the performance of film rentals, in the first two years, the figure exceeded 150,000 units; however, it began to decrease steadily in 2004 and reached about over 50,000 in 2011. Meanwhile, VHS sales, the second-prefered option in 2002 with roughly 80,000 units, faced a dramatic decrease, finally disappearing after 2005.
In terms of DVD sales, in the beginning, the performance was quite low, with about 50,000 units in 2002. However, from 2003 to the end of 2007, the sales number of this option quickly rose and became the top choice of customers. Then, the sales for this type started to fall and stopped at 200,000 units. On the other hand, emerging lately in 2007 with less than 10,000 units, the performance of Blu-ray sales continuously climbed in the next four years; however, the variation was not significant, at over 10,000 units at the end of 2011.
