The table gives information about the proportion of participation in five different sports of schoolboys in two age groups in the UK in 2010.
Overall, it can be seen that the percentage of 6-to-11-year-old boys taking part in playing sports was higher than that of the older group, with the exception of swimming. Also, football was the most popular sports in both age groups.
In 2010, the percentage of participation in football in boys between 6 and 11 was higher than the 12-to-16-year-old group, which accounted for 87% and 78% respectively. Likewise, basketball was more preferred by the younger group than the older one. The involvement of male students who belonged to the 6-to-11-year-old group was 35%, whereas the figure for the older group was 25%. 45% of younger schoolboys joined in playing cricket, in comparison with only 34% of those aged 12 to 16.
In the same year, 6-to-11-year-old male youngsters were slightly more interested in rugby than the older students. The figures were 23% and 21% respectively, a difference of only 2%. However, two age groups shared the same level of interest in swimming, at just 19%, which was the lowest figure in all data surveyed.
